Anna Sage
Ana Persida Cumpanas (Better known as Anna Sage) A prostitute and pimp, worked a deal, or so she thought, with the FBI to catch John Dillinger. She set Dillinger’s arrest and shooting death at the Biograph Theaters.
(Sage told the agents she would be wearing a red dress, hence her moniker The Lady in Red, actually she wore an orange dress)
In the summer of 1934,when Sage was in the midst of being deported as an unsavory type, Sage befriended Polly Hamilton, Dillinger's lover. Once she figured out who he was, Sage decided to turn him in, in exchange for permanent residence in the US.
The FBI paid her $5,000 in cash (which would be just over $100,000 today) Sage claimed the Bureau promised her double that amount. She also assumed she would be allowed to stay in the US but the deportation proceedings were started against her. The FBI, she said, could stop the deportation if she helped them get Dillinger. The FBI said it never made that claim. She was deported in January 1936 to her Romania, the same year. She died from liver disease in 1947.
